Paul Wesley, Nina Dobrev & Ian Somerhalder - The Vampire Diaries
At first I was going to do a spotlight post about Ian Somerhalder, who most definitely deserves to be highlighted as a breakout star of this year. I remember when The Vampire Diaries cast was announced & I heard Ian was going to play the decidedly butch, cruel, illusive Damon Salvatore, I giggled after imagining the sweet skinny little pillow lipped boy I knew from his modeling days & Lost playing a bad ass vampire. That giggle has changed to one of merry pleasure every time Ian’s other worldly pale eyes pierce the screen. The man is transformative & I feel a bit like people must have felt when they laughed at the idea of Tom Cruise as Lestat & then actually watched him command the character in Interview With the Vampire.
I raise a cup of some sort of bubbling crimson elixir to Ian, who has embodied Damon with an intense, sexual, wry, witty personality that has actually surpassed the Damon from the book series. Or maybe it’s merged into one super Damon because I still love book Damon. Here’s an example of why. Also, today is Ian Somerhalder’s 32nd birthday! Welcome to my year, good sir! Ian is a darling generous man whose Twitter is full of sweet hope filled messages about making the world a better place & generous compliments to his cast mates & crew. This year his birthday wish is for donations to a foundation he set up to help animals. Beautiful men who care about puppies & kittens? It’s like he was created in a lab!
So yes, Ian is a delight & Ian as Damon is vampire perfection, but what I love best about The Vampire Diaries is the unique & wonderful relationship between the three leads - Nina Dobrev’s Elena, Paul Wesley’s Stefan & Ian’s Damon. Throughout the course of the series these three have developed this gorgeous symbiotic relationship. They help, love & care for each other, they fight together, they challenge each other & they manage to do this without falling into any torn between two lovers cliches. Stefan seems nearly devoid of jealousy in relation to his brother’s love for Elena. Elena treats Damon’s love gently, never abusing his devotion. Damon respects his brother & Elena’s goodness & by doing so also finds kindness within himself.
I’ve talked before about how much I love the female character’s strength & resourcefulness, how I feel this show is as great a series as Buffy, how it appeals to teenagers & adults alike & about the trio of brunette leads mesmerizing beauty. The extra spark exists in that trio’s intense passion for each other & the fans’ desire to see all three happy & safe & together.
There was this one case when I had this little girl and her mom came up to me, and the mom was like ”Hey, look honey. It’s the girl from the vampire diaries. It’s Elena.” and the girl looked at me cause I was wearing this big period dress that Katherine normally wears, and she said: ”No mommy, no no no! That’s Katherine! I don’t wanna go near her, she’s gonna bite me!” and she was this little girl and she was so cute and she was running away and I just wanted to hug her but I couldn’t…
